Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia encountered in clinical practice, accounting for approximately one third of hospitalizations for cardiac rhythm disturbances [1]. It has been estimated that 2.2 million people in the United States and 4.5 million people in the European Union have AF [2]. These numbers are rapidly increasing as the population ages; the prevalence of AF in individuals older than 80 years is 8% [3]. Thromboembolism caused by blood stasis and endothelial dysfunction is the feared and devastating complication of AF [4-8].
