TERMINOLOGY

In 1976, treatment compliance was defined as the extent to which the patient’s behavior, in terms of taking medication, following diets, or executing lifestyle changes, coincides with the clinical prescription [1]. This particular definition is often criticized, as it places the patient into a passive role in his/her treatment [2]. More neutral terms such as adherence or concordance have, therefore, been suggested.
