Pneumonia is defined as an infection of the lung parenchyma and its presence usually can be assumed in the presence of clinical signs and symptoms consistent with acute lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), such as cough with or without sputum production, dyspnea, fever, pleuritic pain, pathological findings on physical examination (e.g., crackles on auscultation), and a compromised general condition. To distinguish pneumonia from other entities of LRTI, e.g., acute bronchitis or exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the radiological proof of a new pulmonary infiltrate for which there is no alternative explanation is required.
